CHARACTERS
Phileas Fogg
The hero and chief protagonist in the novel. He is introduced to us as a prudent Englishman whose wealth is a source of mystery to all. He is challenged by a fellow gambler to go around the world in eighty days and he takes up the challenge. His rationality, calmness, generosity and self-control impress the readers.
Passepartout
He appears in the initial stage
of the novel itself, as the newly employed French valet of Mr. Fogg. He is an
honest as well as a comic French man, who is loyal to his master and yet gets
into situations that hinder his master’s plans to travel around the world.
Passepartout endears himself to the reader with his warmth, his sense of humor
and his ability to act bravely as well as comically.
Detective Fix
There is a major bank robbery in
England around the same time that Fogg leaves for his journey round the world.
Detective Fix is one of the many other detectives who seek to find the culprit
so they can get a percentage of the stolen money as an award. He comes to the
wrong conclusion that Fogg is the bank robber and is merely pretending to go
around the world when his real purpose is to flee the law.
Aouda
Aouda is a Parsee Indian
princess who is orphaned at an early age. She is made to marry an old Rajah and
when he dies, fanatical Hindus try & force her to commit the sacrifice of
her life. She is rescued by Fogg’s group. She goes back with them to England,
as she is unable to find her relative in Hong Kong.

Summary: Mongolia leaves with Fix,

Bombay. Fix makes friends with Passepartout to get know more about Phileas and
his plans. They dock two days ahead of schedule. The group is to leave Calcutta
by train at 8 pm.
Passepartout
goes sightseeing in Bombay and enters a Hindu temple not knowing foreigners are
not allowed. Three priests attack him and Passepartout flees. He arrives at
7.55 pm at the station and Phileas is not happy. Fix realizes a ‘crime’ has
been committed on Indian soil and is going to use this as a reason to arrest
them. He plans to take the next train to Calcutta, thinking he should be there earlier.

7: Phileas Fogg, Passepartout and Sir Francis Have an Adventure
Timeline: The group travel through the
forest and stop halfway at night. At 6 am they continue their journey, hoping
to reach Allahabad in the evening. Six miles from Allahabad they rescued a
young girl, Aouda and race away towards Allahabad.
Summary: The group have a rough ride through the forest and dry fields.
Bandits are known to terrorize travellers in these places. By evening, they
have covered half the distance to Allahabad railway station. They stop for the
night and at 6 am are on their way again.
With
only six miles to go, they stop for a snack before continuing. Suddenly, they
see a procession ahead. They hide themselves and see a young girl who has been
kidnapped being led by armed men.
Phileas insist on saving her. He still has twelve hours to spare. They
wait till dark for the guards to go to sleep. They creep to the hut where she
is held, and while Passepartout and Ali start breaking the wall of the hut.
Phileas and Sir Francis watch from behind a tree. When a guard suddenly wakes
up, the two of them hit him on the head and help Ali and Passepartout dig away
at the wall.
They
enter the hut and Passepartout carries
the young girl out. But they have been seen and the bandits chase them
shooting arrows at them. Phileas and
group get to the elephant on time, climb on and off they go.

8: The Trip Down the Ganges
Timeline: The group reaches Allahabad at mid-morning. A little later they
board the train to Benares and later Calcutta.
Summary: The travellers then hasten towards Allahabad to catch the train to
Calcutta. They reach the place by mid-morning. Phileas gives the elephant has a
gift to Ali. They board the train with Sir Francis carrying still sleeping Aouda. Later she wakes up and is frightened to
see the men. Phileas explains to her
what happened and Aouda is really
grateful. Aouda informs that the bandits have killed her family.

11: Passepartout Takes Too Great An Interest In Phileas Fogg, and What Comes of
It
Timeline: It is early November, and Phileas has been away from London for
about thirty –six days. The Carnatic leaves
that evening and not the following morning. Phileas misses the boat, hires
another and chases the Carnatic. A
number of days later, around five days, they spot the Carnatic three miles from Shanghai. Phileas and Aouda board it.
Summary: The Carnatic is to leave
Hong Kong for Japan earlier than usual. Fix sees Hong Kong as his last chance
to arrest Fogg on British soil. He meets Passepartout and tells him about his
suspicion but latter does not believe a word – his monsieur is not a bank
robber. To prevent Passepartout informing his master about the Carnatic’s early departure, Fix has arranged for an associate
to knock him out unconscious. Fix then leaves the unconscious Passepartout at
the restaurant.
Phileas
and Aouda realize Passepartout is missing. They also learn from Fix that the Carnatic has left. Phileas
immediately makes arrangements for another boat , the Tankadere, to take them to Shanghai and there they will catch the Carnatic to San Francisco. Fogg
leaves some money with the police to find Passepartout. Fogg invites Fix to
join them . Fix is struck by his gentlemanly manner.
The Tankadere sails through some stormy
weather. Then three miles from Shanghai they spot the Carnatic leaving for San Francisco. The sailors use cannon to
attract its attention and the Carnatic
stops allowing Phileas and Aouda to board. The journey continues!

12: Passepartout Travels on Alone, and Grows A Very Long Nose

that Phileas and Aouda are not aboard. On disembarking in Yokohama he wanders

Suddenly he sees a

wear a six-foot long nose made from bamboo and form a human pyramid with other
acrobats, balancing themselves on their ( noses, legs) . Unfortunately,
Passepartout sees ( Andrew , Phileas) in the
crowd and he rushes towards him, causing the pyramid to come tumbling down. The
three leave the theatre and Phileas pays Mr Batulcar some money for the repair
of the Noses.

13: Mr Fogg and Party Cross the Pacific Ocean
Timeline: General Grant’s trip from
Japan to San Francisco is to take 21 days and a further nine days to New York.
By the ninth day on board the ship Phileas has covered one half of the globe, a
journey that has taken 52 days. Now he has only 28 days left to cover the other
half. General Grant would arrive in
San Francisco on 2nd December, giving Phileas ten days to get back
to England. From San Francisco, the group board a train to New York, pass
through California, Sacremento, the Sierra Nevada Mountains. By the evening of
the second day, they have passed through Utah, the Great Salt Lake and then
make a stop at Ogden. From here the train moves on through the Rocky Mountains
until it comes to a sudden stop before a bridge.
Summary: Time is running out for
Phileas but he does not seem to show any worry. Detective Fix has finally got
his arrest warrant but he cannot arrest Phileas because he is no longer on
British soil. When Fix steps out on the deck, Passepartout sees him and punches
him on the nose. Fix promises Passepartout that now he will no longer try to
delay Fogg’s journey, but rather support him in getting back to Britain as fast
as possible. Of course fix intends to arrest Fogg on British soil but for now
he would not be a threat.
When the
steamer docks in San Francisco in the morning, Phileas books the train to New
York, due to leave at 6pm. The train speeds through cities and prairie country
the train makes a six-hour stop in Ogden and then on north through the Rocky
Mountains. Suddenly the train stops before a bridge because it is out and
unstable. The alternative is to walk Medicine Bow, a mile away. But it will
take six hour because they have to cross the overflowing river. The other
alternative is a risky one. Colonel Proctor, one of the passengers, suggest
that if the train went at top speed , they might make it across. The
train engineer agrees . The train leaps from one bank to another safely, just
before the bridge collapses.

14: Phileas and Passepartout Meet Outlaws and Bandits on the Railroad

Timeline: The train takes them past Fort Saunders, the Cheynne Pass to the
Evans Pass on through Wyoming and Colorado and into Nebraska. Near Omaha the
train suddenly stops. Later the train moves off to New York without Phileas and
group. Phileas has to hire a sled and they catch up with the train bound for
New York. They arrive in Chicago twenty-four hours before the steamer leaves
from New York for England. When they arrive in New York they are 45 minutes too
late to catch the China bound for England.

America but near Omaha, it suddenly stops and quickly starts moving again. A
band of nearly hundred _____________(2) has attacked the train. They are armed
and start robbing the passengers. They have knocked out the engineer of the train and

Learning
that if the train is not stopped, it would crash at Fort Kearney, Phileas
starts moving towards the front of the train but Passepartout beats him to it.
Passepartout crawls under the moving train, until he reaches the front of the
train. He pulls the safety chain from the engine car resulting in it pulling
away from the rest of the train. The train comes to a halt at _________________(4)station.
Seeing the soldiers with guns at the station, the bandits flee.
Worried
for Passepartout’s safety, Phileas
volunteers to look for him and the other kidnapped passengers. Thirty _____________(5)
volunteer to help him and Phileas promises to give them five thousand dollars
if the prisoners are saved. Meanwhile the engineer of the train has woken up
and realizing what has happened, drivers the engine backwards to Fort Kearney
to pick up the passengers. Aouda refuses to go without her two friends and Fix
stays back too.
At
dawn Phileas and Passepartout make it safely back but the train has left. They
are at a loss. Fix suggests hiring a man who has a sled and sails who could
take them to Omaha and catch up with the train. The sled owner , _____________

Soon the train arrives in Chicago twenty-four hours before the steamer leaves
New York for England. But it is too late because the steamer left _____________(7)

15: Phileas Fogg Finds A Way to Liverpool

forty-five minutes to win his wager. At 9 am, he and his friends board the
ship, Henrietta bound for Bordeaux.
Hearing Phileas’s story, the crew sets a new course to Liverpool. They pass Newfoundland
and out into the Atlantic Ocean. On
December 6, 700 miles from Liverpool, Phileas learns they are out of coal. Phileas
buys the entire ship so that the crew can burn part of it. They dock at
Liverpool with just nine hours to go.
Summary: It is already December 12. Phileas goes out to find a ship that
will take them to (Liverpool , Australia) immediately. He strikes up a
bargain with a captain of a small trading ship, Henrietta. Phileas offers to pay (two
, five ) thousand dollars per
passenger and Captain Speedy agrees to
take them but only to Bordeaux. They leave at 9 am. However, on board, Phileas
tells the crew his desperate story and the crew sets a new course to Liverpool.
This angers the captain, Captain Speedy for he feels Phileas has taken over. The first few days of the
voyage is good as they pass Newfoundland and come into the open sea.
On
December 16, Phileas finds out they are out of (coal, food). He
offers to buy the boat from Captain Speedy at a very high price so that he can
burn parts of the boat as fuel. With (seven,
nine ) hours to go, they
arrive at Liverpool and get off the Henrietta quickly. It is the moment Fix
has been waiting for. He arrests ( Passepartout , Fogg).

16: The wager is Lost!
Timeline
: Phileas has exactly nine hours left to be in The
Reform Club . The trip from Liverpool to London would take six hours . But
Phileas is in jail. About two hours
later, he is freed. Phileas hires a special train that leaves at 3 pm.
When he reaches London , it is 8.50 pm. He is five minutes too late to win his
wager.

17: The Wager is Won!
Timeline : Passepartout informs Phileas that that day is Saturday and the next day is Sunday and not Monday as they think. They had travelled east and because of the difference in time zones, have gained an entire day. It is already 8.30 pm on December 21, and so they dash into a cab to go to The Reform Club. At 8.55 pm applause is heard outside the Club and at 8.57 pm Phileas Fogg enters the room. He has won the wager! Summary: Phileas feels sad. He has been ruined by the silliness of one detective. They have travelled thousands of miles and overcome dangers and now he lost his fortune to his friends. Aouda is also sad for this noble man. Passepartout blames himself for his monsieur’s troubles. Phileas does not leave for The Reform Club that day.
After dinner Phileas apologizes to Aouda
for bringing her to England because now he has no money to help her start a new
life. Aouda ask Phileas to forgive her for delaying him in the first place. Phileas
tells her that he will be fine even with
no friends and family. Aouda says that she will be his wife and they can face
the future together. Phileas confesses his love
for her and want to marry her. Phileas asks Passepartout to contact the
Reverend to conduct his marriage the next day . Passepartout runs off.
Suddenly
Passepartout runs in excitedly. He tells Phileas that they had mistaken the
Saturday for Sunday. They had been travelling east and so had gained a day due
to the difference in time zone. In fact thay had returned one day earlier to
win the bet. All three race to the Reform Club in a taxi. At the Club all the
